Throughout the past 40 years, the Montalván family has witnessed the drastic changes that have affected Peru’s coffee industry, particularly within their home region of La Coipa in San Ignacio. Edson Montalván is part of the 4th generation of coffee producers in his family, but when he started seeing more and more land in Peru being exploited for unsustainable agriculture, he searched for a different path that could bring economic stability back to the families in his community.

Finca Montalván is the result of years of research into modernization and agronomic planning. Throughout the farm’s 5.8 hectares, Edson grows geisha, bourbon, pacamara, and maragogype coffee to balance quality, productivity, and sustainability. He took a risk, renewing parts of his land that were ruined by pests and nutrient depletion, and turned the finca into a model of economic sustainability for his community.
